Just as humanities are needed in the digital age, classical production methods and principles are still needed in the Industry 4.0 era. This is because, even as manufacturing and its surrounding environment change, we still pay costs through combinations of time and materials composed of value-added activities and waste.

When 3D printers first came out, I hastily thought that traditional manufacturing would come to an end. However, when I visited a company in China that had installed what was said to be the largest 3D printer there, I was surprised to see motions full of waste and piled-up defects. Through a brief conversation with the operator, I could immediately see that at the root of all this was a human problem. That reminded me of what my teacher, who taught me factory innovation, often said: 'At the root of waste, there is always a human problem.'

To eliminate waste and survive, you need the will to turn every employee into an 'improvement doctor.' When talent accumulates, change follows naturally. Change feels hard when there's no one to lead it—and no confidence in people. Build the doctors who can guide improvement.

People say if you develop talent, they will run away? If you know how to develop them, you can keep developing them. Eventually, one or two loyal talents will remain, and through these talents, you can continue to develop other talents.

The ultimate goal of talent development is to create doctors (talents) who can perform surgery (improvement).
